Common questions

How much does an average holiday cost in 2025?
It varies enormously by destination and travel style. A week in budget-friendly Southeast Asia can cost under £600 per person including flights. A week in Europe mid-range runs £800 to £1,400. Two weeks in the USA typically comes to £2,500 to £4,000. Our Trip Cost Estimator gives you a personalised breakdown for your exact destination, duration and travel style.
Do I need a visa for my destination?
It depends entirely on your passport and destination. Strong passports such as British, US, German and Japanese allow visa-free or visa-on-arrival entry to most countries. Many African passports require advance visas for Europe and North America. Our Visa Checker covers the most common passport and destination combinations with current requirements, costs and processing times.
What is the cheapest time of year to book a holiday?
Shoulder season consistently offers the best value, typically April to June and September to October for European and North African destinations. Prices for flights and accommodation drop 20 to 40 percent compared to peak summer, while the weather is often still very good. School holiday dates are the most expensive period for family destinations regardless of region.
How much travel insurance do I actually need?
At minimum, look for at least £2 million medical cover for Europe and £5 million or more for the USA, where a single hospitalisation can cost tens of thousands of pounds. You also need cancellation cover equal to the total value of your pre-booked costs, and baggage cover of at least £1,500. Our Travel Insurance Guide walks through exactly what each type of trip requires.
What is the best way to spend money abroad?
A fee-free travel card such as Wise, Starling or Revolut eliminates the 2 to 3 percent foreign transaction fees charged by most bank cards. Always pay in local currency when given the option. Never accept dynamic currency conversion at a card machine, which almost always applies a poor rate. Withdraw cash from local ATMs rather than airport bureaux de change, which typically charge 8 to 12 percent above the real rate.
Are these calculators free to use?
Yes, completely free. No sign-up, no subscription, no paywall. We may earn a small commission if you click an affiliate link and go on to purchase something, such as travel insurance or a fee-free card, though this never influences what we recommend. Our verdicts are based on value and honesty, not commission rates.
